Move over, Hollywood. In an attempt to appreciate our great city even more (while also staying out of the heat), we’re tuning in to some of our favorite flicks filmed in and around Miami, from slick blockbusters to Oscar-winning dramas.
8 of Our All-Time Favorite Movies Filmed in Miami
baywatch
This 2017 reboot of the ’90s-era series is chock-full of A-listers (Priyanka Chopra, Zac Efron, Dwayne Johnson). The TV show was set in Malibu, but this time South Florida’s Hollywood Beach is the backdrop for an adventurous team of lifeguards who ditch the water to fight crime. Corny? Sure. Entertaining? You bet your bikini.
scarface
One of the best films ever made? Yep, that’s what critics have to say about this old-school thriller. (And we couldn’t be prouder.) Starring Al Pacino, the iconic flick—a remake of the 1932 film with the same name—centers on a powerful drug lord in 1980s Miami.
marley And Me
You’ll have all the feels as you watch newlyweds John and Jenny Grogan (played by two of our favs, Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston) leave Michigan for South Florida and start an adorable life with their yellow Labrador pup, Marley. (Pro tip: You might want to have a Costco-size box of tissues nearby for this one.)
moonlight
This Oscar winner makes Miami real proud. Created by homegrown filmmaker Barry Jenkins, Moonlight is a coming-of-age drama that takes a unique look at a young black man growing up in the Magic City.
miami Vice
Based on the television series of the same name, Miami Vice is an action crime thriller about two Miami-Dade police detectives who go undercover to fight drug trafficking. No biggie, right? Besides, we’ll take any opportunity to watch Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell on the big screen.
thunderball
A James Bond movie in Miami? Say no more. Sean Connery (arguably the best Bond) heads up this tale of a mission to find two stolen atomic bombs and save a major city (in this case, Miami) from being destroyed. Ah, all in a day’s work.
war Dogs
We’ll see anything with Jonah Hill, Miles Teller and Bradley Cooper. This trifecta of a cast portrays a fictionalized tale about government corruption, greed and guns. But of course, with these three in the starring roles, it’ll also keep you giggling for two straight hours.
the Birdcage
This film is quintessential Miami at its prime. (Drag queens! Butlers! Lots of neon!) This mid-’90s comedy, starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, is set inside an Ocean Drive drag club where the owners/lovers (Williams and Lane) go out on a limb to impress their son’s conservative girlfriend’s family. How? Well, let’s just say it involves Lane dressing up as a modest housewife.
