Anyone that’s attended a wedding, a cocktail party, heck, even endured an extra long day at work can attest: Standing tall in high heels for hours on end is kind of the worst. Tonight, at the 76th Annual Emmy Awards, Abbott Elementary star Lisa Ann Walter spilled the beans on her trick for withstanding the pain and not immediately switching to flats.

In an interview during ABC’s red carpet pre-show, Walter revealed that she pads her feet with lidocaine patches, which serve as a numbing agent for sensitive areas (ahem, the spots most prone to blisters, we’re guessing). In fact, she not only swears by it for a multi-hour red carpet event, but for weddings, too—pretty much any place where you know you’ll be on your feet for hours and without an opportunity to slip into a comfier pair of shoes.

Kind of genius, no? Although keep in mind, the hack to prevent sore feet is a bit controversial—after bubbling up on TikTok last year, many a podiatrist say that applying a patch or topical lidocaine spray can lead to bigger picture foot problems (i.e. it’s one thing to apply it for minor aches like a burgeoning blister, but given it’s a numbing agent, you want to be wary that it could lead to bigger problems like stress fractures).

Still, a special occasion—such as the Emmy Awards—often calls for making an exception. Fingers crossed, Walter can kick off her heels for all the after-parties her and the Abbott Elementary cast, which is nominated for five awards, will undoubtedly attend.
