Whenever I need something new to watch, I usually turn to Netflix’s list of top shows and movies. I’ve admittedly watched a lot of content as an entertainment writer, but every once in a while, I come across an underrated gem that somehow slipped through the cracks.

That’s exactly what happened with Laid. The twisted show originally premiered on Peacock in December 2024, and while it has somewhat flown under radar, it managed to receive a 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a huge feat.

Laid follows a party coordinator named Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), who is single at age 33. After her ex-boyfriend unexpectedly passes away, she starts to notice a horrific pattern: all her former partners are dying in the order she slept with them. Ruby enlists the help of her best friend, AJ (Zosia Mamet), to investigate the mysterious murders and warn her former partners. As a result, she must confront her past relationships and lingering feelings.

In addition to Hsu (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Mamet (Girls), Laid also stars Tommy Martinez (Good Trouble), Michael Angarano (This Is Us), Andre Hyland (Barry), Ryan Pinkston (Young Rock), Olivia Holt (Cloak & Dagger), Elizabeth Bowen (Resident Alien), David Denman (Mare of Easttown) and Susan Berger (Jury Duty).

In an interview with Variety, Hsu explained why Ruby and AJ’s friendship is a key element to the show’s plot. “It’s a love story of chosen family, and when you’re looking for love in a romantic way, you’re actually also looking to bring someone into this idea of family,” she said. “I think female friendship is such a deep, deep, not even just extension of that, but a root system of that.”

Laid is now streaming on Peacock.
