Kevin Costner Yellowstone Paramount Plus CAT2

Last year, Yellowstone fans were devastated to hear that the Paramount+ Neo-Western drama series would end after season five. Not only that, but it was hard for them to accept that one of the show’s lead stars, Kevin Costner, would be leaving the show before the series’ conclusion. But now, it appears that the 69-year-old actor has reportedly had a change of heart.

According to Puck News, Costner has been making it known that he wants to be included in the final part of Yellowstone season five, which is slated to premiere in November 2024. However, as of right now, the outlet reported that there are currently no discussions for Costner, who played the beloved Montana rancher, John Dutton, to return in the final episodes of the series.

Back in June 2023, Yellowstone creator and writer Taylor Sheridan exclusively sat down with The Hollywood Reporter and discussed his current relationship with Costner.

While acknowledging that there are no hard feelings, Sheridan shared that Costner had been trying to leave the show to pursue a “passion project,” which is the upcoming film, Horizon: An American Saga. FYI, the two-part movie is set to debut in theaters on June 28, 2024.

“He and the network were arguing about when he could be done with Yellowstone. I said, ‘We can certainly work a schedule toward [his preferred exit date],’ which we did,” Sheridan told the publication. “My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t altered. His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful…and I’ve never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work out on the phone.”

Sheridan went on to say that Costner’s exit didn’t change the ending he pictured for Yellowstone, but he is still “disappointed” by the actor’s sudden departure. “It truncates the closure of [Costner's] character. It doesn’t alter it, but it truncates it,” he added.

We really hope Costner can make a surprise return (or at least a cameo) in the final part of Yellowstone season five.
