Looks like the competition is getting fierce on NBC’s The Voice.

During Tuesday’s episode, contestants Rachele Nguyen and Mac Royals (who were a part of Reba McEntire’s team) entered the “Battle Rounds” and sang “How Deep Is Your Love” by the Bee Gees. Though McEntire picked Nguyen over Royals as the winner of the battle, in a shocking turn of events, judge John Legend was so blown away by Royals’s performance that he swooped in and stole the singer for Team Legend.

After the performance, Legend, 44, gushed over the Arkansas native’s stellar vocals. “Mac, I just love the sound of your voice,” he said. “It’s just so gorgeous. It’s soulful and it’s got richness and character, and it’s the kind of voice I love to hear. There were some pitch moments, in that early part, but once you revved up, it was buttery gorgeousness. So good.”

But there were no hard feelings. While Royals joined Team Legend, battle winner Nguyen was able to stick with Team Reba.

When Royals first joined the competition, the 31-year-old singer already knew which team he wanted to be a part of. “I already knew in my head who I wanted to pick, but at the end of the day, I was like, ‘I need all of them to turn around,’” he said (per Kark.com).

However, you might be surprised to know it wasn’t Team Legend. It was actually Team Reba. Growing up, he watched the country singer on the Reba show with his grandmother, so he has always been a fan.

“My end goal is honestly to put people, artists here in Arkansas in a position to where they can really win so they don’t have to go through some of the trials and the errors that I had to,” Royals added.

We love a dramatic steal, John.
