Tis the season...and, no, I'm not talking about the holidays. I'm talking about awards season. Does it feel premature to be discussing nominations? Sure. But is it? Considering the Golden Globe noms come out on December 9, I'd say we're late to the nomination-discussing party.

I've already raved about two contenders this season: Anora, a must-see dramedy which is bound to snag the incredible Mikey Madison a Best Actress nod, and Conclave, a surprising thriller starring the incomparable Ralph Fiennes which will undoubtedly grab multiple noms. But I'm now here to add one more film, and a few more actors, to my list of early contenders.

This weekend I took in two films—Hot Frosty streaming on Netflix and Wicked in theaters. The former was super cute, but sadly not award-caliber. The latter was absolutely incredible and I'd be shocked if it didn't get an award for everything and everyone involved. Keep reading for my reviews.

Hot Frosty Review

Will this holiday rom-com with a tender touch of magic be winning any awards? No. No, it will not. But it really is still worth the watch, especially if you love an easy, fun watch to get you in the holiday spirit.

The 92-minute movie, which could just as easily be airing on the Hallmark Channel, stars Lacey Chabert of Mean Girls fame and Dustin Milligan from Schitt's Creek. Chabert is a widow whose life is a mess, but who somehow still looks like a movie star. Milligan is a super hot snowman who comes to life when Chabert's character places a magic scarf around his neck. Seriously.

The film is really fun if you can get past the ridiculous premise and the challenging dialogue. Milligan gives Buddy the Elf-style charm and naivety (only with abs) as he learns about love and life as a human being. And Chabert keeps the film surprisingly grounded by constantly questioning the premise of a magical snowman (even if the rest of the townsfolk buy it from minute one). It even makes several winks to Chabert fans, particularly when it shows a bit of former co-star Lindsay Lohan's Netflix movie playing on a TV.

The cast includes a ton of talent (even if some of it is wasted), such as Katy Mixon (American Housewife), Chrishell Stause (Selling Sunset), Lauren Holly (Picket Fences), Craig Robinson (The Office) and Joe Lo Truglio (Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Standouts are by far Robinson and Truglio who play a pair of bumbling cops trying to take down Hot Frosty himself.

Hot Frosty is currently streaming on Netflix (where it previously hit number one on the top ten movies list).

Wicked Review

Give. It. All. The. Awards.

I did not stop smiling for the entire viewing of Wicked Part One, now playing everywhere in theaters. As a fan of the Broadway musical, I was not only not disappointed, I was floored by how the film defied gravity and elevated the source material to new heights.

As expected, Cynthia Erivo is next-level incredible as Elphaba (she'll be getting a Best Actress nomination for sure). But in a wonderful surprise, Ariana Grande is so good as Glinda, delivering charm, depth and humor like a pro (she'll be getting a Best Supporting Actress nomination, mark my words). I also wouldn't at all be surprised to see Jonathan Bailey (who plays a nuanced and really fun Fiyero) snag a Best Supporting Actor nom or for the wickedly-talented Michelle Yeoh (as a delicious Madame Morrible) to get a Best Supporting Actress nom alongside Grande.

The film will obviously be up for Best Picture and Best Director, among a slew of other nominations. And, honestly, it should be.

The film feels epic while also keeping you closely connected to the characters. The musical numbers are large and lively without taking you out of the film. And the changes/additions from the original only help to serve and deepen the story (which, TBH, feels very very relevant right now...).

Has there been a lot of hype around Wicked? Yes. Is it warranted? Yes times 100.
