If you’re looking for a nostalgic documentary that exposes the inner workings of a now-defunct app, then apparently there's a trending film out there for you. The only catch? You can't watch it.
Introducing Glitch: The Rise and Fall of HQ Trivia.
Although the documentary originally premiered in 2023, it didn’t receive a ton of attention at the time. But now, thanks to the power of TikTok, Glitch is currently trending. Unfortunately, the film was pulled from streaming platforms after it was revealed that a key piece of evidence had been doctored. Scandalous!
As the title suggests, the doc highlights the rise and fall of HQ Trivia. The app originally debuted in 2017 and gained popularity for its real-time features where players participated in a live trivia game for the chance to win cash prizes. It seemed like a cool idea…until it wasn’t. As the app gained popularity, the tech issues supposedly became a major issue.
Glitch: The Rise and Fall of HQ Trivia claims to expose what was really happening behind the scenes. Although it looked like a professional operation, the business was reportedly in shambles behind the camera.
In a statement, director Salima Koroma said that she wanted the documentary to highlight the chaos that took place behind-the-scenes.
“HQ Trivia was supposed to ‘revolutionize television.’ But what happens when the people who are running it—‘the smartest guys in the room’—don’t actually know what they’re doing?” she said. “The CEOs who make the Vines and the WeWorks and the Twitters are hailed as the rock stars of our age. But a lot of them are simply emperors with no clothes on. It’s kind of absurd. And I wanted that absurdity to be felt all throughout the film.”
But now that the film has been pulled from platforms, I don't know what to believe. I’d love to hear what host Scott Rogowsky has to say about this.
