Jon Snow fans, you might want to sit down for this one.

Remember when HBO confirmed last year that a new Game of Thrones spinoff based on the Lord Commander, portrayed by Kit Harington, was in the works? Well, it won’t be coming to the small screen anytime soon.

Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the project was shelved temporarily. But now that both the writers’ and actors’ strikes have ended, fans have started to wonder what has become of the series. And now, HBO CEO and chairman Casey Bloys has finally given us an answer.

Back in November, the network head announced that fans would have to wait for Snow’s spinoff to premiere since it’s very far from getting the “green light.” Bloys referred to the multiple spinoffs, per TVLine, “I wouldn’t say there is anything else in that world that is close to a green light or anything.”

So just to clarify: The spinoff could still be happening. But fans will have to wait quite a bit longer for more details about the upcoming series, such as the release date, casting, etc.

GOT fans first learned about the spinoff in June 2022, when The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported the news. The Snow spinoff is the seventh Game of Thrones project in development, along with 10,000 Ships (aka Nymeria), 9 Voyages (aka The Sea Snake) and Dunk and Egg.

Audiences were first introduced to Snow in the first season, where he was a member of the Stark household. His character went on to become a fan-favorite amongst viewers. Harington played the role for all eight seasons until the show came to an end in 2019.

Back in December 2022, the 36-year-old actor participated in a panel discussion for the official Game of Thrones fan convention. While he didn’t comment on his character’s spinoff, he did talk about Snow’s actions in the series finale. (FYI: The show ended with Jon killing Daenerys and being banished to the Wall.)

“I think if you asked him, he would've felt he got off lightly,” he said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “At the end of the show when we find him in that cell, he’s preparing to be beheaded and he wants to be. He’s done. The fact he goes to the Wall is the greatest gift and also the greatest curse.”
