The first episode of Firefly Lane season 2 picks up right where the previous installment ends, with Kate (Sarah Chalke) attending her dad’s funeral. In the season 1 finale, Kate is approached by Tully (Katherine Heigl) outside the church, but she kindly asks her to leave the service. And in season 2, Kate is struggling to forget about the encounter.

The new episodes also explore the aftermath of Johnny’s (Ben Lawson) accident, along with his complicated relationship with Kate. (If you recall, Johnny is injured in an explosion while covering the war in Iraq.) The story switches between present-day and flashbacks, which can become confusing if you aren’t paying close attention to their dated clothes and hairstyles. Still, season 2 introduces just enough new information to keep viewers wondering what’s to come.

If you’re considering watching Firefly Lane season 2, then don’t walk—RUN. The new episodes are reminiscent of other fan-favorite shows, like Virgin River and Sweet Magnolias. But unlike last season, the new episodes address several unanswered questions.

For example, in the first episode of season 2, viewers are given a major hint about Kate and Tully’s mysterious falling out. During Kate’s dad’s funeral, Marah (Yael Yurman) references an accident. And right on cue, the screen flashes to show police lights illuminating a broken windshield before returning to present-day.

It also introduces a few new plots that feed into the full-circle story line, like Tully’s estranged father and impending lawsuit. Plus, fans of the book should know that the major twist—yes, that one—is introduced in the Part 1 finale as a teaser for the inevitably emotional Part 2. (You’ve been warned.)

PureWow Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

If you enjoyed the first season of Firefly Lane, there’s no reason to not watch the follow-up installment. The story addresses relatable themes of friendship and family without feeling too preachy, and it caters to a wide audience—even if you didn’t read the book.
