The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a dream project for generations of moviegoers and fashion lovers. The hit 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada is glam canon, starring Meryl Streep as powerful fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, a sort of queen bee (living in a New York City palace) attended to by her assistants/ladies-in-waiting played by Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt. Lately, a buzz has been building around the original film, spin-offs and yes, the possibility of a sequel with participation from the original cast. Here’s what we know so far.

Has The Devil Wears Prada 2 Been Officially Confirmed?

The film has not been officially confirmed, but a groundswell has been building since January 2024, when Meryl Streep presented an award at the SAG awards, accompanied by Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt. In the comic bit, Streep forgets her glasses and script, Hathaway and Blunt sweep onstage to bring them to her, then they all lapse into chilly put-downs in the manner of Streep’s character in Prada, Miranda Priestly. The chemistry of the moment bubbled, the audience was on the edge of their seats and the video went viral. And then in July, Variety reported that Disney is developing a Devil Wears Prada sequel.

Who Will Be in the Cast of The Devil Wears Prada 2?

“I feel like I've been hearing about a sequel for years but never with any solid details or high buzz. I do think Emily Blunt's character is by far the most interesting one to follow—if only to see how she handles the WFH fashion moment—and other fashion friends agree," says PureWow fashion editor Abby Hepworth. "Everyone is amused by a second Devil movie, but the industry has changed so much since then, I just don't quite know what it would look like."

But the industry's all about sequels these days: back when Prada came out, established stars like Streep, Hathaway and Blunt regarded sequels as a bit gauche, with less creative potential and artistic prestige than new projects. However today's entertainment industry banks on established intellectual property, so Devil Wears Prada 2 is viewed as a viable project. After all, Streep starred in Mamma Mia 2 and is currently starring in a second season of Only Murders in the Building, while Blunt starred in A Quiet Place 2.  Additionally, Hathaway posted “Back to Genovia” on Instagram, announcing she'll appear in Princess Diaries 3. The studio producing? Disney, the same studio developing The Devil Wears Prada 2. As one Redditor comments, “This is unfortunately the future of movies…Execs won't greenlight anything new because of the significant financial risks, so we'll start getting spin-off stories in established universes from here on out.” To paraphrase Priestly, groundbreaking.

As for the underdog heroine of the first film, would she be back? Hathaway’s waffling. In April, the star was quoted in V Magazine, when asked if she’d be in a sequel: “Probably not. We all love each other and if somebody could come up with a way to do it, I think we’d all be crazy not to.”

What Is the Plot of The Devil Wears Prada 2?

According to Variety, “The storyline reportedly follows Priestly as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and faces off against Blunt’s character, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs.” As a person who worked at Condé Nast during the period of the film (and once interviewed with the IRL Miranda Priestly), this plot sounds fun. I've seen real reversals of fortune, in which assistants are fired, only to become powerful industry players. Or, as one Redditor puts it, “Its not rare in a small industry to run across former coworkers in new jobs. Sometimes the senior-junior status could be reversed. The usual advice is not to burn bridges because you may run into coworkers again.”

Additionally, the movie has relevance for a whole new crop of profresh women. "The Devil Wears Prada has been my favorite movie since the day I saw it in theaters at 10 years old, always allowing me to escape into its glamorous, sexy world," says Gallery Media Group's Audience Development Specialist Nicole Frazzini. "As someone who aspired to work in publishing (in part because of the movie) at a time when the internet and social media was turning the industry upside-down, I think it would be so interesting for a sequel to portray how these characters responded to the decline of print magazines. I think a sequel would have the potential to say a lot about an industry that has captured the public imagination for decades, as well as the ever-changing role of fashion in our lives."

Who Is Writing and Directing The Devil Wears Prada 2?

Variety reported that Disney is in talks with the original film’s screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna to write. Puck reported that that the film’s Oscar-winning producer Wendy Finerman has agreements from Streep and Blunt to sign on for a sequel. No director has been announced.

Is There a Sequel to The Devil Wears Prada Book?

There are not one but two sequels by Lauren Weisburger, the author of the ur-text on which the movie was based. There's Revenge Wears Prada (2013) and When Life Gives You Lululemons (2018). While Revenge Wears Prada debuted at number 3 on the The New York Times Bestseller List (remember what we were saying about franchises being safe bets?), the second sequel didn’t climb the bestseller lists. Nor does either book get much love on Reddit, although Lululemons does merit interest since it reprises the story of Emily Charlton, the Emily Blunt character in the movie.

What Is The Devil Wears Prada 2 Release Date?

Official reports still place the film in development, so there’s no official release date on for a sequel (the Production List website lists filming to begin on November 30, but that defies credibility). For now, fans wanting to engage with the Devil Wears Prada multiverse can buy a ticket to the London stage production of The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical. Starring Ugly Betty star Vanessa Williams as editor Miranda Priestly, with music by Elton John, the production is almost completely sold out for its first week, starting October 24. Curiosity about the show is high, since the production has had mixed reviews in it its previous Chicago run—but that was before it added the star power of Williams as its imperious head editor.
