I've started to notice a running theme when it comes to Denzel Washington movies. Whether it's a classic like John Q, an action film like 2 Guns or a recent flick like The Little Things, it'll always make its way to the top movies list on Netflix. On the subject of the award-winning actor's impressive catalog, I'd like to take us back to one of the most underrated Denzel Washington movies that may finally be getting its due. It was a top ten Netflix movie just a few months ago and has lately been a sought-after watch. Let me introduce you to Safe House.

The 2012 movie is about a junior CIA officer named Matt Weston (played by Ryan Reynolds), who is forced to go on the run with a former CIA operative and fugitive named Tobin Frost (played by Washington). Due to a group of mercenaries vowing to kill Frost after he betrayed the agency, Weston must move him to a secure location.

Aside from the big leads, the movie also stars Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring, Bates Motel), Brendan Gleeson (Braveheart, The Banshees of Inisherin), Sam Shepard (The Right Stuff), Rubén Blades (Fear the Walking Dead), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2) and Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones).

It was number one on Netflix's top-watched list in 2021 and then returned in June of this year at the #4 slot. So why has it become so popular more than a decade after its release? Well, you have Denzel Washington, of course. It was reported that the actor preferred to do his own stunts in the film, including a dangerous scene that even director Daniel Espinosa was on edge about him doing. Leave it to Washington to go above and beyond for a role.

Upon its release, it was met with mixed reviews—mostly due to the script—but it still earned box office success. According to Box Office Mojo, it was Washington's second-biggest opener behind American Gangster. As of right now, it has a 53 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 63 percent score from the audience with over 100,000 ratings. PureWow's own Associate Editor of Entertainment & News Nakeisha Campbell, for one, ranked it last in her Denzel Washington movie watch list, although these fans and critics have had great things to say:

"Though it's not a premise we haven't seen played out before on the silver screen, Safe House is a movie that sucks you in, guts you, and spits you out at the end." — Candice Frederick

"I had a great time with Safe House and I don't penalize it for aiming at a specific mark and hitting it." — Keith Garlington

"It's very predictable but good action. Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington do a nice job. Car chase scenes are good and solid action." — Mark B

It's rated R with strong violence and language, so be prepared for an intense viewing experience. With a runtime of 1 hour and 55 minutes, it's worth checking out (despite the mixed reviews), especially if anything soon comes of the sequel that has purportedly been in the works for the past ten years. Who knows? It just might become your new Denzel fave.
