I'm an Entertainment Writer and This Is Hands Down the Most Underrated Denzel Washington Movie of All Time

It's more than a basketball movie

Years before Denzel Washington made headlines with box office hits like Man on Fire and The Equalizer, he teamed up with the incomparable Spike Lee to make, in my humble opinion, one of his best movies of all time: He Got Game.

It's not your run-of-the-mill, underdog sports drama (like, say, Coach Carter or Hoosiers). This film revolves around a high schooler named Jesus (Ray Allen)—the top basketball prospect in the country. The world knows his name. The world sees him as a "savior" and girls are pining for his attention, but then there are college recruiters and agents who won't give him a break, and members who expect him to carry them financially. It's a lot for a young man to handle. Especially when he's forced to confront his father (Washington) who's been serving time for accidentally killing his mother.

Now, I'm no basketball fan, and I can't personally speak to the film's impact on hoop culture, but I will say that it opened my eyes to the many pressures that real-life, up-and-coming athletes face. I took notice of the sneaky recruiting tactics and corrupt practices behind the scenes, and this definitely changed how I saw the sport. But as much as I appreciated the insight into the world of basketball, it's the other aspects of the film that left a bigger impact, like Washington's incredible performance and Lee's exploration of problematic family dynamics.

Here's why I think it's a must-watch.

1. Denzel Washington Delivers an Incredible Performance

To be fair, I've yet to be disappointed by any of Washington's films. He has this quiet confidence that makes it seem like he's barely putting in effort to play his character, but in this instance, Washington brought so much authenticity and depth to Jesus's father, Jake. In his shared scenes with Allen, one would think that he was truly the high schooler's father. I mean, I still think of the hurt on Jake's face when he appears for the first time and Jesus fails to acknowledge him! I'm just blown away by his ability to speak volumes without saying much or anything at all. (Oh, and did I mention his impressive basketball skills??)

2. It Explores Complicated Father-Son Relationships

Jake was not the perfect dad. In his efforts to mold the ideal ball player, he wound up pushing his son away and landed himself in jail after letting his temper get the best of him. So, understandably, when Jake reappears, Jesus isn't in the mood to patch things up. Years have passed and there's deep-seated resentment on his end, but Jake, still seeking forgiveness, reminds his son that resenting him won't change the mistakes he made.

I really enjoyed watching the shared scenes between these characters—especially their final one-on-one game. It wasn't a friendly one, and it didn't necessarily end with an emotional heart-to-heart, but for once, they looked like a genuine, father-son duo—and it brought back memories of all the times they trained during Jesus's childhood. I also like that Lee didn't tie things up into a neat little bow, with regards to the future of their relationship. It speaks to the fact that this kind of dynamic is messy, and true reconciliation takes time.

3. The Character Growth Is So Engaging to Watch

When it comes to the coming-of-age theme, the more obvious example is Jesus. Not only is he dealing with the stress of picking a school, he's also navigating the ups and downs of adolescence while trying to take care of his baby sister single-handedly. All throughout the film, his core values are tested (like when the coach tries to bribe him with money for some info on where he'll go next) and he's forced to discern which people are genuine, given that his friends, his girlfriend and even his uncle pressure him to make questionable decisions. I won't give any spoilers, but I will say that it's fascinating to see how these challenges shape and mature Jesus.

As for his father, Jake, it appears that prison has humbled him, but when he reunites with his kids, he's forced to confront his dark past and make amends with a bitter son who's opposed to patching things up.
