One of his best

I still remember the very first time I watched Denzel Washington’s 2006 film Déjà Vu. I was 12 years old, and completely enamored because I had never seen anything like it before. Sure, there were other time travel movies I already had under my belt such as the Back to the Future series, The Terminator and even the classic 2004 rom-com 13 Going on 30. But Déjà Vu was unlike anything I had ever watched up to that point. Directed by Tony Scott and starring Washington, Val Kilmer and Paula Patton in one of her early breakout roles, the plot centers around an ATF agent who travels back in time in an attempt to prevent a domestic terrorist attack that takes place in New Orleans. To my surprise, the film received mixed reviews from critics—something I wasn’t aware of until rewatching recently.

It’s now been 18 years since Déjà Vu’s original release, and rewatching it now, at age 30, has given me a new perspective. While still as enamored with it as I was all those years ago, I also now have the belief that this is one of Washington’s most underrated movies. Here are a few reasons why you should give it a watch.

1. The Twist on Time Travel

ATF Special Agent Doug Carlin (Washington) gets a unique case handed to him when a ferry explodes killing over 500 people.  Upon examining the body of a young woman and doing a little more investigative digging, he finds out this same woman actually called his office that morning, and that she was killed by the bomber hours before the incident. This leads to Carlin being invited to join the FBI.

Enter: “Snow White”…an innovative machine  that uses satellite footage to form a triangulated image of events four-and-a-half days in the past.

Carlin is convinced he can use this machine to prevent these crimes from happening, and what happens is almost an immersive experience—like you’ve put on 3D glasses and have entered a different dimension. I would say it’s a mixture of Justin Timberlake’s 2011 film In Time, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s 2014 film Inception—time travel with a bit of a mind screw.

2. The Heart-Pumping Action Scenes

Certain directors have a specific “style” that uniquely relates to them, and the same is true of Tony Scott. His fight scenes are quite intense with strategic close-ups and slow-mo moments for dramatic effect, of course. You’re also not quite sure if Carlin is going to survive these fights, which leads me to my next point—the questions that pop up in your head while you’re watching.

3. The Confusing Questions

With time travel movies come a lot of questions. In the case of Déjà Vu, what happens if Carlin gets killed while stuck in the past? Is it permanent? Is the mission a total loss? Can somebody else go back in time to save him after he has already gone back in time to try and save somebody else? Do the original course of events that led to Carlin going back in time in the first place get altered? Remember when I said this film is also a mind screw? Yeah…

PureWow Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

I wonder what rating Washington himself would give this film nearly 20 years later? I’m personally going with a 4-out-of-5 due to its entertaining storyline, fight scenes and interesting visuals. All-in-all, I would say Déjà Vu is a film that has aged better with time (slight pun intended), and clearly I’m not alone as this movie has become something of a 2000s cult-classic.

You can watch Déjà Vu via Prime Video now.
