Mod Sun is a singer, songwriter and rapper, who was born and raised in Montana. (FYI, his real name is Derek Smith.) Since he started dating Lavigne, he’s become her go-to collaborator. Not only did Mod record a single with her (“Flames”), but he also served as a co-writer and co-producer on her new album, Love Sux.
In the new issue of People magazine, Lavigne discussed their relationship and revealed that she was enjoying the single life—that is, until Mod came along. “I was like, ‘I need a break from men,’” she said. “Then two days later that all went out the window!”
According to Lavigne, the pair met during a songwriting session, and they instantly hit it off. In February 2021, dating rumors started circulating shortly after they were spotted together in public.
“I was getting out of a big relationship, and for the first time in my life, I thought I should probably be single. I got together with [Mod Sun] to write a song. We just clicked,” she told People. “I was like, ‘Should you be doing this?’ It was fun and exciting.”
