Netflix Renews Controversial Series for Season 2 (& I Can't Be the Only One Who's Secretly Thrilled)

Cue "Thunderstruck"

The fans asked for it. And now, Netflix has answered by renewing America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders for season two.

Today, the streaming service released a promo video announcing that America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders is returning for season two. Netflix didn’t share any further details about the oddly therapeutic show except that it’ll premiere sometime in 2025. As much as I’d love to watch the new episodes immediately, this gives me plenty of time to perfect the “Thunderstruck” choreography. (You know you’re tempted, too.)

The video features a group of DCC cheerleaders performing their now-famous “Thunderstruck” choreography (you know, the moves that went viral on TikTok), while head choreographer Judy Trammell is counting in the background. At one point, the cheerleaders gather in a circle and say, “DCC season two, woo!”

The group throws their pom poms on the ground and walks away to reveal the number “2.”

It’s important that you don’t confuse America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders with Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team, which ran on CMT for 15 years. Making the Team documents the audition process and follows the veterans and newcomers as they endure training camp in an attempt to make the team.

All of this is covered in America’s Sweethearts, but there’s less focus on becoming a cheerleader and more focus on the team itself. The Netflix series chronicles the days leading up to the first game, featuring the girls learning choreography, getting fitted for uniforms and moving to Texas (for out-of-towners who make the team).

When America’s Sweethearts premiered on Netflix, it was met with backlash over a multitude of things (like body image, misogyny and compensation). However, some viewers (like myself) found it to be strangely therapeutic.
