*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

Last night, the first episode of American Horror Story: Delicate premiered on FX. The twelfth installment received mixed reactions when it was first announced because the teasers were centered around Kim Kardashian making her AHS acting debut. As expected, skepticism was an at all-time high.

Luckily, the premiere confirmed that there’s more to AHS: Delicate than its reality TV-filled cast list. In fact, it might be some of Emma Roberts’s best work. Keep scrolling for details.

The plot is based on Danielle Valentine’s horror novel Delicate Condition, which isn’t for the fainthearted. The episode begins with a terrifying scene featuring a woman (Roberts) waking up to find a hooded intruder laying in her bed and holding her hand (#gross). Right on cue, the episode does a time-jump to one week prior and offers a glimpse into the, er, interesting events that led to the opening scene.

We soon learn the woman is named Anna, and she’s an up-and-coming actress. She and her husband, Dexter (Matt Czuchry), are desperately trying to have a baby. They decide to do an embryo transfer—for the second time—in the hope of starting a family.

Throughout the episode, Anna acts extremely paranoid to the point where we don’t know if her point-of-view is accurate or a hallucination. She thinks she’s being followed, and it does seem that way. But the issues arise after the embryo retrieval, leading us to question whether she’s having a bad reaction to the procedure or medication.

The premiere episode is designed to lure viewers into wanting more, and we totally fell victim to the trap. Some AHS seasons—like Asylum and Coven—rely heavily on fantasy to illustrate the story. But in Delicate, the plot seems extremely relatable (i.e., fertility) and relevant (i.e., Tom Sandoval references).

And much to our delight, the episode doesn’t revolve too much around Kim Kardashian (who plays Anna’s publicist, Siobhan) and her acting skills (which, surprisingly, aren’t half bad). The reality star is featured in a few scenes, but the story line is greatly centered around Roberts, who’s likely vying for an Emmy Award with her performance.

PureWow Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

In terms of premiere episodes, AHS: Delicate is an intriguing introduction to the chaos that’s to come. The installment teases just enough mystery to leave us wanting more (and to remind us to lock the doors before going to bed tonight).

American Horror Story: Delicate airs every Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX. (The installments can also be watched on Hulu the following day.)
