When it comes to hair products, I’m picky. All or nothing. Either I love it and can’t let it go, or I immediately give it away. With fine and thin hair that holds virtually no shape, I give basically everything that crosses my path a tall order. In the years that I’ve been writing about beauty, there have been plenty of flops, but the one brand that has stayed consistently in my arsenal has been R+Co. The celebrity hairstylist-loved collection of haircare and styling products has consistently performed, so it was no surprise to me when I saw that the brand was trending in Google. After digging around, I narrowed down 11 of R+Co’s most-searched products—many of which I had actually not yet tried—and put them to the test to see what would reign on my vanity.

What Is R+Co?

R+Co is a collective of hairstylists with two lines of haircare and hairstyling products: R+Co and R+Co Bleu, the eco-friendly iteration. The brand is a favorite of many celebrity hairstylists, from Jenna Perry for Suki Waterhouse to Marwa Bashir for Renee Rapp. R+Co offers everything from shampoo and conditioner to hair masks and scalp treatments, plus every styling tool you could dream of, including hairspray, dry shampoo and heat protectant.

How I Tested the R+Co Haircare Line

First, I researched the brand’s top-searched products to see what was trending. Then, over about three weeks, I tried the 11 most popular R+Co products to see which ones really lived up to the hype. I evaluated everything on the PureWow100 scale, rating them for ease of application, efficacy, longevity, aesthetic and value. Here are the four I’d keep going back to.

Out of all the products I tested, this one jazzed me the most. No matter how much hairspray I apply, I always have flyaways. At first, I was concerned that the pomade would be too heavy, since my fine/thin hair looks greasy quickly if there’s too much product weighing it down. However, you really only need a featherlight touch on the baby hairs to get them to stick to the rest of your hair. I was shocked. I’ve never looked so neat. The tube is small—0.5 ounces—and lightweight, so it’s easy to throw in your bag for touch-ups. My rule of thumb is that I never touch-up, so by the end of the day, I was surprised that most flyaways remained tamed.

My hair is bone-straight and doesn’t hold shape well unless I cocktail the right ingredients. In my quest for the best hairspray for fine hair, I axed many a product that promised all-day hold. I wasn’t sure what to expect of Outer Space, but after a few weeks of testing I’ve determined that it’ll hold on for eight to 12 hours—and even overnight if I wrap my hair up to help preserve the shape. Anything that prolongs the effort I put into hairstyling is a winner in my book. Sprayed out of the can, the scent is fresh and delicate with bergamot, fig and wood accents, and linger lightly and pleasantly throughout the day.

  • Fragrance: Rosey Eyed (bergamot, wild fig, cyclamen, lotus flower, cedarwood, tonka beans)
  • Ingredients: amphomer polymer, pro-vitamin B5

Texture spray is my secret weapon for an instant volume boost. When it’s humid, I like using it to give body to my hair without putting in effort to style something that’ll fall out in three seconds. Zig Zag provides the right amount of grit without making my hair sticky, and lasts all day, allowing my hair to grip bobby pins and claw clips—things previously impossible. It also resets well with a little flip upside down. While I’m not the biggest fan of the scent (woods and tobacco), it’s not bothersome and is easily masked by other things, like perfume or hairspray.

  • Size: 5 ounces
  • Fragrance: Stars Align (deep palo santo, white cedarwood, smoky tobacco leaf, fresh pine needles, waterlily)
  • Ingredients: bamboo stem extract, styling resins, mineral pigment, zeolite

Admittedly, I am not a fan of dry shampoo and wash my hair every night. However, sometimes circumstances necessitate preserving a hairstyle overnight, or for several days, and I’ll cave. I’ve definitely tried my fair share of products and tend to favor those with an aerosol spray as I find the particle mist finer and easier to distribute. Thus, the pump was the downer on Spiritualized. However, it still managed to deliver an ultra-fine mist. I was able to get two full days out of my hair without feeling super weighed down by residue. This will now be my emergency go-to dry shampoo.

  • Size: 1.7, 4.2 ounces
  • Fragrance: Rosy Eyed (bergamot, wild fig, cyclamen, lotus flower, cedarwood, tonka beans)
  • Ingredients: glycerin, silica, castor oil
