Whether you have sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, normal-to-combination skin or simply love a trendy product (ahem, pore-shrinking PMD Wave Pro), you’ve probably realized—like I have—that there’s no one right beauty routine. We all have different needs, but I have found one product, in general, that people of all ages and skin types tend to rave about (and no, it’s not going on Accutane in the hopes of experiencing Accutane nose). I’m talking red-light therapy masks, like the Omnilux Contour Face LED device ($395), which promise to create smoother-looking skin with little-to-no effort. While many experts feel more research is needed on red light therapy, the current results are promising—and the anecdotal experiences I’ve had (and my mom’s had, as I’ll share in a bit) make it well worth trying in my book.

Now, I know what you’re thinking…there are TONS of beauty devices on the market that claim to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, so what makes this one so special? The Omnilux Contour Face is an FDA-cleared device that not only has hype around it, but it also has impressive results, especially for people with aging skin. In fact, my 61-year-old mother put it to the test over the course of 12 weeks to see if it’s actually worth it—specifically, if it can target those fine lines and wrinkles. Read on for her full review of the red-light therapy device, from the good to the bad and the before and after photos.

How Does the Omnilux Contour Face Mask Work?

To put it simply, the Omnilux Contour Face Mask is like getting a professional-grade facial at home, only instead of an aesthetician working her magic on your face, it’s a flexible LED device that acts as a second skin. It rests on your face like any other mask and is held securely with Velcro straps that you can adjust to fit your head. When on, it emits 132 medical-grade LEDs and two clinically proven wavelengths of light—red and near-infrared—which, according to the brand, is supposed to work on a cellular level, resulting in a reduction of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage and any other signs of aging in tandem with stimulating new collagen. Best of all, the Omnilux Contour Face gives you these derm-level results at home (or while traveling!) after just a few weeks of 10-minute sessions.

How Do You Use the Omnilux Contour Face?

With a recommended use of three to five times per week for four to six weeks to see visible results, my mom found the Omnilux Contour Face device to be quite simple to operate. The flexible silicone face device comes with an attached, rechargeable battery controller that uses a USB-C line to USB-A connector and has an easy set up process. “Once the mask is in position using the Velcro straps, I push the button and the light will turn on,” she tells me. “Then, it automatically shuts off ten minutes later,” giving you ample time for a quick nap, mindful meditation or audiobook catch-up. After using, you can wipe the inside of the device clean in preparation for your next wear.

The secret to unlocking the best results is to use it consistently for the recommended amount of time, then continue with routine maintenance treatments after you reach desired results.

OK, but Does the Omnilux Contour Face Actually Work?

Take it from someone with beautiful, aging skin who has developed more worry lines than she’d like from raising four rowdy children: When used consistently (there’s that key word again!), the Omnilux Contour Face can improve a few problem areas on your skin. “I definitely see less wrinkles and am very impressed with my jawline area,” my mom tells me, noting that her skin’s appearance looks firmer and smoother. “The most noticeable change was in the saggy skin around the mouthline, which was great to see,” she adds. Though she didn’t see any visible improvement with sun spots, pigmentation issues or blemishes—try the Omnilux Clear ($395) for that—she did see a reduction in wrinkles and improvement in her skin’s texture.

Are There Any Downsides to Using the Omnilux Contour Face?

When I took to TikTok, some customers mentioned that the overall design was a bit bothersome, particularly how the battery cord is hardwired to the device, which makes it difficult to store the device flat (as directed by the brand), especially when travelling.

According to my mom, the Omnilux device is incredibly comfortable to wear, which I assume is mostly thanks to its flexible design that contours to your face—hey, it’s in the name. The only downside she pointed out was the lack of protection for the eyes. “I did shut my eyes prior to turning the light on, [but] when I became more comfortable with the mask, I did try to open my eyes a few times so very slightly and did not like doing that,” she says. The upside? The woman who does a million-and-one things in a day for everyone else except herself was forced to use that ten minutes to enjoy some much-needed shut-eye.

Is the Omnilux Contour Face Worth the Money?

What I Like

  • automatic shut off
  • improves wrinkles, texture and skin firmness

What I Don't Like

  • may take longer to address blemishes and pigmentation
  • no eye protection

When all is said and done, the Omnilux Contour Face LED device deserves a spot in your beauty routine…but don’t just take my word for it. “I find that I am collecting an arsenal of items as I get older, [and], although the results are amazing, I am not one who feels that Botox or surgery is for me, so the Omnilux Contour Face device is definitely worth including in my collection,” says Meraz. If you’re looking for a quick fix or want to treat blemishes, sunspots or hyperpigmentation, the Omnilux Contour Face device might not be the best investment for you, but “I definitely see an improvement in my skin,” adds my mom, referring to her wrinkles and texture.

At $395, it is pricey, but it does allow you to enjoy up to five, ten-minute treatments per week in the comfort of your own home for a fraction of the price. Think about it, one facial at the spa with an added red-light therapy treatment might cost you just as much as the device itself. And even after having to step away from using it for a week to serve as a caregiver for my grandparents, my mom was still able to benefit from the mask despite her sudden lack of consistency.

So, whether you’re in the market for an LED device designed for aging skin or are intrigued by its skin rejuvenating properties, the Omnilux Contour Face can support you through high-stress times, bringing you closer to smoother, softer and tighter skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is It OK to Use Omnilux Contour Face Every Day?

As I previously mentioned, you’ll want to keep to Omnilux’s suggested use of three to five 10-minute treatments per week for four to six weeks, followed by regular maintenance as you see fit. If you want to use your device more often than that, I’d consult with a doctor or dermatologist before proceeding, especially if you experience an abnormal amount of skin redness or if you have persistent irritation while using your Omnilux Contour Face.

Do Dermatologists Recommend Omnilux?

While the red-light therapy device is recommended by one of Omnilux’s dermatologists, when we previously spoke to board-certified, New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Turner, he told us that light therapy isn’t for everyone, particularly people with pigmentation conditions like melasma or rosacea, and can worsen the condition. My mother has rosacea, so it’s interesting to see this concern confirmed after she didn’t see any improvements in her skin’s pigmentation.

“I always say that any technology, even if it’s proven to be effective, is along a curve. Some people are not going to be responsive. It’s not going to be the right technology for everyone,” says Dr. Turner. Anyone older using the device may be less responsive to stimulation like red light therapy because, as Dr. Turner explains, our body produces less collagen as we age.

TLDR; Yes, the FDA-cleared Omnilux Contour Face LED device is dermatologist-recommended and tested by the brand’s in-house doctors, but it’s best to consult with your dermatologist before using, especially if you have skin pigmentation conditions.

How Long Until I See Results from the Omnilux Contour Face Mask?

Per the brand, the red-light therapy device will take approximately four weeks to start seeing results and six weeks before you reach desired results after consistent use. For my mom, it was a slow-and-steady-win-the-race vibe, as she was using the device during a stressful time and on aged skin. While she didn’t revert to her 20-year-old youthful skin, she did notice that her skin was firmer and smoother over time.
