If you haven’t noticed, blush is a big deal here at PureWow. Whether we’re discovering new tricks to lift and sculpt our cheeks or testing viral products, we can’t get enough of the makeup staple, which is having quite a moment right now. I have loads of blushes in my collection, but I was curious to test two of the buzziest formulas on the market: the Merit Flush Balm and the Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick. I put them cheek to cheek, ready to crown one as the blush of the year—and spoiler alert: It was a tight race. Keep reading for my honest review.

My Review of the Merit Flush Balm

What We Like

  • buildable coverage
  • blends well with finger or brush
  • great for no-makeup makeup looks
  • lightweight formula

What We Don't Like

  • small
  • requires multiple application to see more pigment

Merit

  • Formula: 19/20
  • Ease of Application: 20/20
  • Color Payoff: 19/20
  • Longevity: 18/20
  • Value: 18/20
  • Total: 94/100

I was familiar with Merit’s game when a fellow editor tested the entire collection and deemed the Flush Balm as “leaving a radiant flush that makes me feel like I’ve been pinched in the cheeks by my great aunt Rosey.” The blush is also loved by celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker and Lily Collins, so I had to see for myself all the hype surrounding this viral French product.

The first thing I noticed was the size. Most blushes I own have the same tube or circular packaging, but this one is small enough to fit in my pocket. But don’t be fooled by its small size. One test swipe and my cheeks were graced with a rosy hue and radiant finish. Once I applied it on my cheeks, it glided nicely across my skin and blended well with my finger or a brush. Infused with vitamin E, it has a nourishing and lightweight formula that lays comfortably on my combination skin.

The product is available in 13 shades, and I decided to try one of the most popular: “Stockholm.” According to the brand, “Microfine pigment powders provide a touch of color without covering up your natural skin texture.” With that information, I realize how subtle the color is on my complexion. If I was going for a no-makeup makeup look, this blush would be perfect. I did want to see more of the shade, so I added few more swipes (about three to four, to be exact) and slowly started seeing the baby pink hue peeking through my cheeks.

My Review of the Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks

What We Like

  • great color payoff
  • easy to use
  • blends well with finger or brush
  • creamy formula

What We Don't Like

  • can be too pigmented for some skin tones
  • weird scent
  • expensive

Westman Atelier

  • Formula: 19/20
  • Ease of Application: 20/20
  • Color Payoff: 19/20
  • Longevity: 20/20
  • Value: 18/20
  • Total: 96/100

Westman Atelier is a beloved brand that’s been worn by everyone from Nicole Kidman to Reese Witherspoon. While Merit has been around since 2021, Westman Atelier has three more years on their competitor. Founded by makeup artist Gucci Westman, the luxury brand has long been a staple in the celebrity world—and maybe for this NYC gal, too.

I’m a sucker for packaging, and the Westman Atelier blush hit it out of the park. The magnetic cap to open and close the blush was music to my ears. I also appreciate the seamless way of turning the tube to access more product and there’s a good amount inside that can last me quite a while.

One swipe almost knocked me off my seat. I used the “Petal” shade and it’s *very* pigmented, folks. The dusty nude rose can be seen from a mile away. Thanks to ingredients like jojoba oil, it was easy to blend with my finger or a brush to give me a seamless pop of color. It’s also formulated with raspberry leaf extra for a boost of hydration, vitamin C and E to protect against environmental stressor and kaolin clay to absorb any excess oil—the latter being great for my oily areas (aka my cheeks).

The Bottom Line: Which Blush Is Worth Your Coins?

Both blushes serve a purpose depending on my makeup look. While they are both smooth and comfortable on my skin, I prefer Merit for no-makeup makeup looks, while Westman Atelier works best for dramatic moments when I want my blush to be the center of attention. They both can also be used on the lips and eyes, making it a multiuse product in my routine regardless. But, what else sets them apart?

  • Shade Range: Merit has an extensive shade range with 13 in their collection compared to Westman Atelier’s nine shades. As someone who prefers darker shades, I find Merit has more of a selection, especially if I want better color payoff .
  • Finish: Since Merit is a balm, it has a radiant, glossy finish. The balm texture takes some getting used to (you know, I’m not a big fan of balm products), but this blush might change my mind. Meanwhile, Westman Atelier is a cream blush that leaves a natural finish behind.
  • Coverage: They both do a great job at blending, but Westman Atelier has better color payoff. Merit is all about a second skin look, and the baby pink shade is proof. When it comes to Westman Atelier, a little goes a long way, whereas Merit needs a few layers to show up, at least for my skin tone.
  • Packaging: If you care about packaging (like I do), I would lean towards Merit for traveling, as it’s so tiny it won’t take up much room in your makeup bag. The one pet peeve I do have is that once I get to the end of the blush (eventually), there’s no way of turning the jar for more product, whereas Westman Atelier is reminiscent of faves like Ilia and Colourpop, that let me twist and get more product with no problem.

And if you’re interested in how much money you actually need to drop, Merit is $30 and Westman Atelier is $48. Despite the difference, I believe they are both worthy of adding to your collection. Like I mentioned, they both serve a different purpose depending on the occasion—and I’m perfectly fine with that.
