Although Pantone crowned peach as its color of the year, we believe there’s another shade that’s going to be huge in 2024, and we’re not the only ones. Pinterest predicts indigo blue will make a comeback, becoming a core shade in our beauty routines. They’ve got the data to back it up, too: According to their recent trend report, search terms like “blue eyeshadow aesthetic” and “blue glam makeup” have risen 65 percent. That news piqued our interest, so we talked to a few makeup artists to find ways to wear the vibrant hue all year long.

First, Why Is This Color So Popular?
According to Color Psychology, indigo blue represents intuition, devotion, fairness, wisdom and authority, among other things. With an impressive line of symbolism, no wonder we’re letting this hue lead our new year beauty looks. “It’s universally flattering and an amazing way to incorporate a pop of color into your look. It also pairs well with other colors, so you never need to tone down your outfit or makeup,” says Dagdag.
How to Incorporate Indigo Blue in Four Ways
1. Mascara
The experts say blue mascara is the best way to ease the striking shade into your beauty routine. “Mascara can give a subtle hint of blue without dominating your whole look,” says Dagdag. All you need is one to two coats, depending on how dramatic you want your lashes. One more thing: “If you think your blue mascara is too bright, try layering it over with a black mascara or just apply the hue to the tips of your lashes,” she adds.

2. Eyeliner
In the last few years, blue eyeliner has become a bolder alternative to the classic black liner look as this Princess Diana staple continues to be a great option to make your eyes pop. Consider rocking a thin line across the lid and tiny flick at the end like Cardi, or try your hand at a thick reverse cat eye like Rihanna. A pro tip: “I love applying the pencil at the lash line and following your shape for a subtle pop of color. You can also create a winged liner using an angled brush and swiping the eyeliner against the brush and gliding it at the tail end of the eye for a sharp wing,” says Nguyen.

3. Eyeshadow
As mentioned, eyeshadow inspiration is popping up more on our feeds, and Nguyen predicts this color will be at the forefront. “Blue eyeshadow and tones have been reinvented in every decade from the ‘60s to the early aughts. It’s safe to say that it’ll always be a statement color,” he says. “You can easily apply it with the ease of your fingertips or use a fluffy eyeshadow brush. Try a teal blue shimmer with a black base to create the most futuristic blue metallic mix. The more product you press [on the lids], the more intense the shimmer will pop!” You can also skip the shimmer and go for dark blue shadow across the entire lid to really draw attention to your eyes.

4. Lipstick
This option is the boldest one yet, but our experts have a few tips to nail the look. Dagdag recommends applying concealer around your lips before applying lipstick to “ensure that your lips are a clean focal point.” Take your time applying the product evenly and use a cotton swab to gently wipe away any excess and soften the lines. Want to experiment further? Add lip liner or some shimmer to elevate your pout.
