If sleek, shiny locks are the goal, then technology is the secret weapon—just ask hair-bonding giants Olaplex and K18. These popular treatments are known for their ability to repair damaged strands, but they don’t come cheap. What if you could get the same results for a fraction of the price? Enter: Kristin Ess+, the new line from celebrity hairstylist Kristin Ess, which combines the bond-building and biomimetic technology of its high end rivals into an affordable suite of hair care products all under $25. With bold claims of bond building, color protection, keratin-safe formulas and results after just one use (for all hair types), we were intrigued. So, four PureWow editors with different hair types put the line to the test for four weeks. Here’s what happened.

What Is Kristin Ess+?

Kristin Ess+ is a new line of haircare products developed by hairstylist Kristin Ess, who counts celebs like Selena GomezSydney SweeneyQuinta Brunson and Gabrielle Union as fans. The Plus line emphasizes clinical testing and science-backed formulas that combine biomimetic and bond-building technology into a single formula. (Psst: Biometric tech aims to repair keratin’s broken amino acid bonds, while bond-building refers to repairing broken disulfide bonds, which in this state can eat away at the hair shaft.)

There are two product categories: Peptide Restore and Peptide Protect. The former is focused on repair and strength, while the latter focuses on retaining hair color and shine. In total, there are eight products spanning both categories.

How We Tested the Kristin Ess+ Collection

Over the course of a month, four PureWow editors with different hair types used the Kristin Ess+ products exclusively.

  • Executive Editor Catrina Yohay: High-density fine hair. Wavy-ish/unruly texture. Normal scalp that doesn't get very oily, typically only washes once or twice a week. Color-treated (though taking a break because pregnant). During winter, hair feels very dry and frizzy, and like most people who dye/color, constantly fighting the fade.
  • SEO Editor Marissa Wu: Low-density fine hair. Texture is straight and slippery, tends to be flat without products. Not color treated or excessively heat styled. Washes hair nightly, otherwise looks greasy after a day without dry shampoo. Struggles with split ends.
  • Associate Sales & Deals Editor Destinee Scott: Thick hair with a natural texture that is curly/wavy. (Wears it straight.) Dry scalp, issues with dandruff and flaking.
  • Editorial Assistant Courtney Mason: High-density curly/coily hair and a dry scalp. Color-treated hair, but not looking to preserve the color. Has a little heat damage towards the front of hair and tends to have trouble with dryness and breakage.

We evaluated the line based on the PureWow100 scale, rating each product on efficacy, formula, versatility, aesthetics and value for an average out of 100 total points.

The Shampoo and Conditioner Left Our Hair Glossy

What We Like

  • decadent formulas don’t weigh down hair
  • adds shine and moisture

What We Don't Like

  • may not be compatible with coily hair
  • did not see split end improvement

Kristin Ess+

Overall, we found that the shampoos and conditioners delivered on their promise to boost shine and add moisture. After testing my fair share of shampoos and conditioners, I found that the Kristin Ess+ formulas were pretty rich, bordering on decadent. The shampoo, in particular, had an almost creamy lather. However, neither weighed down my fine, thin hair. In total, three out of four editors (Scott, Yohay and myself) all noticed that our hair seemed glossier and less dry.

The added bonus that I wasn’t expecting was the volume boost. My hair usually sits flat on my head, but with these products it already looks like I’ve done a spritz of texture spray.

But it’s worth noting that although the shampoo and conditioner worked for those of us with straight to wavy hair, Mason (who has the coiliest hair pattern) said she wasn’t a fan. “Usually after a wash and condition, my curls look defined and soft. But after using these products, they were less defined, frizzier and honestly, very dry,” she reports. “These were the only products I tried that I feel fell a little flat on what was promised. The conditioner also felt like it was sitting on top of hair instead of being soaked in, which isn’t a usual experience. Despite all of that, my hair still felt slightly stronger after a few washes.”

The Leave-In Conditioners Were Hit-Or-Miss

What We Like

  • adds body to hair without weighing it down
  • moisturizing without being greasy

What We Don't Like

  • hair can get stringy if you use too much

Kristin Ess

The Kristin Ess+ line has two leave-in creams: the Peptide Restore Bond Recovery Leave-In Treatment and the Peptide Protect Anti-Fade Leave-In Conditioner. Personally, I was skeptical about this one, because my hair is easily weighed down. Leave-in conditioner usually makes my hair look greasy and stringy, so I was prepared for the worst. But color me surprised. I used the leave-in treatment, and while rich, it wasn’t heavy in my hair. After drying, it just adds body—which I will take in any shape or form. It also has heat protection up to 450 degrees, which was nice because I could go straight to blow drying my hair without putting in additional products.

Mason thought it worked well on her coily hair, too, telling me it was her favorite product from the line. “My hair felt very soft and moisturized after using it. It also didn't leave a greasy film or texture on my hair and dried quite nicely,” she says.

Meanwhile, Yohay tried the leave-in conditioner. She reported that her hair felt a little stringy, but noted, “Maybe I used it incorrectly/too much—I may need to dial in the best way to use [it].” I can attest that the tiniest amount (less than a pea—maybe a tic-tac?) was enough for all my hair, so use sparingly.

The Bond Fortifying Serum Is Best for Straight Hair

What We Like

  • lightweight and hydrating
  • loose gel texture is easy to apply

What We Don't Like

  • mixed results on curlier hair types

Kristin Ess

Yohay and I, who both have straight to wavy-ish hair, had the most success with the Peptide Restore Bond Fortifying Serum. We found it lightweight, hydrating and easy to apply. It dispenses almost like a gel and slips through my hair with the texture of a gloss.

Curly-haired Scott, on the other hand, reported that after applying, “my hair ended up feeling dry and weighed down (felt similar to how my hair feels when I don’t wash out conditioner well enough).”

The Overnight Bond Mask Was a Convenient Addition

Kristin Ess

When I think of hair masks, I typically envision something I need to apply pre-shower to wet hair and rinse out. The hoopla is so discouraging I’ve probably only done it five times in the last year. So, when I was introduced to the Kristin Ess+ overnight dry mask, I was hyped. All editors all found that we woke up to softer, smoother hair—even Mason, for whom the other products were hit-or miss, couldn’t stop raving about this mask. “I rarely use regular masks in my hair (I think they’re messy), but I really loved the easy-to-use spray method that it offers. My hair felt softer the next day instead of the usual dry and brittle feeling,” she says.

My only caveat is that the mist hangs quite heavily in the air—so much so that it’s a bit hard to breathe in the first few seconds after you’ve sprayed it. My advice is to do this by a fan or an open window, lest you be stuck in a literal cloud of fumes.

The Aesthetics Were 10/10

“[Everything was] easy to use with a pleasing scent that smells fresh and clean but isn't too perfumy. I could still get a whiff of the scent on my hair two full days after washing,” Yohay notes. Everyone agreed that the scent was amazing, and Scott said that anyone who loves a good scent will love the collection. (I concur.)

The packaging is also sleek with a rich aubergine color. “I love the shape of the bottles—they look so chic in my shower,” Yohay raves. Two things we did note could be improved upon: The product lines are differentiated by contrasting purple and lilac labels, but these are small and were confusing at first. Additionally, while I appreciate the squeeze bottles for sustainability reasons (pumps cannot be disposed of in municipal recycling), I think that if you have mobility issues (arthritis or other muscle conditions), this will be a challenge. The squeeze bottle design also meant I had flecks of product flying into my face when I snapped it shut or found myself shaking vigorously to get the conditioner to move to the bottom.

So, How Does It Compare to Olaplex?

Kristin Ess+ claims to unite bond building and biomimetic science into one convenient package. So how does it stack up against Olaplex, the luxe haircare brand that built its product on bond repair? Take it from Scott, who’s used Olaplex for years: “This collection is comparable to Olaplex. More specifically, this line could be worth it if you want to spend a little less. But overall, I still prefer Olaplex. As someone with damaged hair, I just don’t know if this is on the same level, and I feel like this line is missing key products for getting a good at-home blowout (like oil and a blow-drying serum).”

The Bottom Line

After four weeks of testing, Kristin Ess+ seemed to work best and most consistently for editors with straight to moderately wavy hair types, though the Overnight Bond Repair Mask was a universal favorite, and we all agreed that in terms of scent and design, the products really knocked it out of the park. Overall, Kristin Ess+ seems to be a great, affordable alternative to competitors K18 and Olaplex, each of whom specialize in the technologies that this new line has now united. Every product is under $25 and they can be purchased separately, so you’re not locked into a set of hit-or-misses. Taking into account all feedback, our PureWow100 review is a solid 88/100.
