I have been fortunately #blessed with incredibly thick hair thanks to my Arab and Jewish roots. It’s dark (via dye–thank you Madison Reed!), but when I was younger my hair was blond as can be. And under all the dark brown dye, is a head full of natural dirty blond locks. That said, the only place that I don’t have darker hair is my eyelashes. Go figure?! The roots are a dark brown, [1] but they fan out with blond tips. Because of this, you can’t always tell that I have long, thick lashes. Bummer, right?! But, IDUN Minerals Mascara Vatn Volume 38 °C has totally changed the game for me, and it’s become the only mascara that I *truly* swear by. I just can’t stop talking about it. See exhibits A, B, and C. (I’ve even turned my coworker Associate SEO Editor Marissa Wu and my roommate Kelly onto the stuff. It’s just that good.)

Applying IDUN Minerals Mascara Vatn Volume 38 °C

IDUN’s formula is a creamy, highly pigmented mascara that goes on in a seamless swipe. The first coat may be the only one you need, but because of its malleable texture, enriched with moisturizing shea butter and castor oil, it’s incredibly buildable if you go for a second or third layer, avoiding any lumps or clumps along the way. The rubber applicator spoolie brush enables the wearer to put on the product with precision. It’s a tubing mascara, so it’ll envelope each individual lash with product, for a full-bodied look. Because of its highly pigmented formula, my ultra blond eyelashes are darkened to perfection. Its volumizing and lengthening qualities help accentuate the already-present length and body that my lashes have.

You Don’t Need an Oil-Based Cleanser to Take It Off

One of the best parts of the Vatn formula is that it’s very easy to remove. Despite being waterproof and generally unbudgeable, all you need to do is use a bit of warm water to gently rub it off. I’m still in awe of the science behind that. It’s truly like magic and has saved me money on makeup remover. It takes me less than a minute to remove the formula from my lashes and leaves little to no residue behind. Plus, because it only reacts to warm water, you’re in the clear if you’re caught in a rainstorm or are exposed to colder water throughout the day, it’s just that sturdy.

Bottom Line

The Vatn mascara is 100 percent vegan and ophthalmologically tested and the packaging is made of 100% recycled materials, so it’s one of those products that you can feel good using too, knowing that it’s more sustainable for the environment around us. Not to mention, it’s also hypoallergenic, so it’s safe for all skin types to use. After talking with their founder at an event, I was excited and surprised to learn that IDUN is one of the only makeup brands that’s allowed to be sold in Swedish pharmacies because of their clean beauty practices. So you’ll find their powders, shadows, mascaras, brow gels and more stocked on the shelves amongst skincare brands, medications and other wellness products. A huge feat if I’ve ever heard one.

Without exaggeration, IDUN Mineral’s Vatn mascara is one of the *only* brands I’m reaching for these days. I don’t wear a ton of makeup, and when I do, I’m very particular about what I’m putting on my face. The ease of use and functionality alone make it worth the higher price point, but even still it’s more affordable than some other brands on the market. I also love that they expanded their shade range to include brown, blue and green, allowing you to play around with color and edgier looks.

What We Like

  • long-lasting, yet easy to remove
  • creamy and hydrating formula
  • 100% vegan
  • packaging made of 100% recyclable materials

What We Don't Like

  • the brand still isn't available at Sephora or Ulta
  • can start to come off if your eyes are watering

IDUN

The brand is really starting to take off in the U.S., but you’ll find their products listed on Amazon for easy access and the American version of their website. I’m hoping we get to see them amongst all the greats at Sephora or Ulta soon. In the meantime, don’t delay in adding a IDUN Minerals Mascara Vatn Volume 38 °C to your cart. I promise, you’re gonna love it.
