How to Prevent Hyperpigmentation in Two Steps

You know that saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"? We’re pretty sure Ben Franklin was referring to hyperpigmentation.

"The single best way to treat hyperpigmentation is to prevent it from developing to begin with,” says Dr. Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

For ultimate protection Dr. Zeichner stands by two things: sunscreen and topical antioxidants. “Topical antioxidants like vitamin C work double-duty to prevent against free radical damage and interfere with the production of abnormal pigmentation,” he explains. Layer one underneath a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least 30 and you’re good to go (until it’s time for reapplication, of course).
