When it comes to treating acne, most of us have the impulse to eradicate all traces of oil from our faces. And while having too much oil can certainly contribute to clogged pores, not having enough can cause further inflammation—especially since “acne medications like retinoids can be very drying,” explains Dr. Shari Marchbein, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York University. “It’s especially important for people with acne-prone or oily skin to moisturize and protect their skin barrier function.”
To that end, Marchbein recommends looking for a moisturizer with deeply hydrating ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin, shea butter, petrolatum, dimethicone and hyaluronic acid. It should also be oil free and non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t clog pores).
