Your Beautyblender Makeup Sponge Just Got a Very Smart Upgrade

Raise your hand if you use or have used a Beautyblender makeup sponge before. OK, now raise your hand if you wet it every. single. time (which is actually how you're supposed to use it). It's alright if you don't. You're not the only one. In fact, it's such a common issue that the brand has launched a limited edition version of their beloved egg-shaped sponge called the Wave.

Named for it's shade-shifting color, it transforms from a soft lavender to a pleasing pale blue when soaked in hot water. While every sponge is made from a water-activated foam, the Wave also has temperature-activated technology to visually signal that the sponge is ready to use. (And if that's not obvious enough, the sponge has the words "Wet me" imprinted on the side, as a not-so-subtle reminder).

Is it really that important to wet the dang sponge before use? 100 percent yes. This ensures that the Beautyblender absorbs the minimal amount of product so more of it ends up on your face—where you want it—and less on the sponge itself. Plus, it gives you a softer, more airbrushed finish.

Got it. How wet should the Beautyblender be before application? We've found that the best way to prep your sponge is to run it under the faucet, while simultaneously squeezing it, until it doubles in size. Once it's puffed up significantly (think: the way your pants fit post Thanksgiving), give the sponge one final squeeze to remove any excess water.

A final note: The dyes used in each sponge are non-toxic and water-soluble. That said, your BB may shed dye for the first couple of washes—similar to a pair of blue jeans. Rest assured, those colors will not transfer to your skin. Happy blending, y'all!
