‘This Is Us’ Star Justin Hartley Talks About His Character’s Mystery Son & Reveals Who He Hopes the Mom Is

Out of all the surprises the This Is Us season three finale brought, one of the most shocking details was the fact that Kevin (Justin Hartley) has a son in the future. To see him end things with Zoe (Melanie Liburd) in one scene and have a child in the next was definitely jarring. Now, Hartley is speaking out about his character’s little surprise.

The 42-year-old actor sat down with Entertainment Weekly to fill in fans on a few details and even talked about who he hopes Kevin’s baby mama is.

So when will we learn this mystery woman’s identity? “As far as the timeline, I’ve been told a few different things. They know what it is, but I think the ‘when’—when we find out—they’re deciding,” Hartley explained.

He went on to say the story line “comes together in a way where it’s very satisfying for the audience. I also think it makes a lot of sense, and it’s one of those standard This Is Us writer moments where when you see it, you go, ‘Why didn’t I see that coming?’ But you can’t see it until it’s in front of your face.”

Hmm, does that mean it’s someone who’s been around Kevin all along? The obvious option for the mother of Kevin’s child is Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge). But with her engaged to another man, we’re not sure how that would play out. Hey, it could even be Madison (Caitlin Thompson) or Jennifer Morrison’s new character. Still, Hartley is hopeful that Kevin and Sophie will rekindle their romance.

“In a way, she’ll always be in his life in some capacity…I love [Alexandra]. I think she’s a wonderful actress. I also love that story line. I love the idea of this playboy, cavalier kind of fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants guy that we met has this one true love,” he explained. “I think it’s so awesome. And so Jack. I certainly hope that there’s more of that story to be told.”

Same here, Justin. Same here.
