makeup organizers to try in 2024
Dasha Burobina for PureWow

Whether you’ve been trying to replicate Reese Witherspoon's 5-minute makeup routine or you've somehow purchased way too many products trying to achieve that pearl skin glow, beauty collections can get out of hand, fast. Rather than throwing it all in a bag and hoping for the best, a good makeup organizer can help you find a home for it all—and actually put those lip glosses, blushes or eyeliners to use (without rummaging around for them). Some organizers are much better than others, however, and I've done a deep dive to unearth the most high-quality picks.

How I Chose the Best Makeup Organizers

When selecting the best makeup organizers, I sifted through a variety of options including travel cases, acrylic organizers and tiered storage options to suit a variety of needs. I made sure each option would fit on a vanity or dresser or could be easily packed away to travel with.

As far as price was concerned, I focused primarily on options under $50 with the occasional splurge thrown in, based on overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Special features like mirrors and multiple compartments were considered, and the makeup organizers chosen have at least a 4.5-star rating or higher and were favored among reviewers for their durability and longevity (if reviews were available for said item).

Editors' Top 5 Makeup Organizers

Best Overall

1. Sorbus Makeup Organizer

What I Like

  • tons of drawers
  • multiple color options
  • aesthetically pleasing

What I Don't Like

  • doesn’t hold extra large palettes

Sorbus

This acrylic makeup organizer is a winner because it holds a ton without taking up too much space on your countertop, thanks to its tall silhouette. In fact, with three or four large drawers, two or four small-sized drawers and 16 slotted compartments on top that are ideal for sticks and brushes, it will pretty much fit your entire cosmetic arsenal. It’s made of durable, acrylic plastic, so you can see everything inside, and it comes in nine different colors to best fit your style. (My one qualm is that for all its room, the large drawers still aren’t big enough to fit oversized eyeshadow palettes, so keep that in mind as you shop.)

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 6.22 x 14.17 x 9.21 inches
  • Promising review: "When beauty products are out of sight, they're out of mind for me. This organizer keeps everything from tweezers to nail polish in clear view—without looking messy—and there's a strange delight I get from having everything in its place." — Candace Davison, PureWow VP of editorial

Best Travel Makeup Organizer

2. Beis Cosmetic Case

What I Like

  • easy to wipe clean
  • several color options
  • removable pouches

What I Don't Like

  • mirror could shatter
  • bulky

Beis

Traveling with your makeup collection doesn't have to mean dumping everything into whatever travel pouch you have. "I'm the girl who travels with her entire makeup collection, no matter where or how long the trip is, so a spacious travel bag is a must, and this one holds so much," says Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay. "Love that it includes a mirror that can stand up on its own and a separate brush holder with a little shield (so the brushes can stay relatively clean)...Only complaint: It takes up a lot of space in a suitcase, no matter how full or empty it is, but it's worth it to me."

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 9.5 x 4 x 7 inches
  • Promising review: "I love how structured it is and that it maintains its shape, so I don't have to fight the case while rooting around for a liner or lip gloss." — Yohay

Best Rotating Makeup Organizer

3. The Tranquil Abode Rotating Makeup Organizer

What I Like

  • rotates 360 degrees,
  • adjustable shelves

What I Don't Like

  • doesn’t hold large palettes
  • doesn’t come assembled

The Tranquil Abode

PureWow Associate Editor Chelsea Candelario is obsessed with The Tranquil Abode makeup organizer. Its open, rotating design completely upgraded her beauty and skincare organizational game by making it easier to find 30+ of her favorite products, thanks to its spinning design and adjustable compartments. "I’m able to grab and go without searching high and low for what I need," she says. "Plus, it looks like I’ve gotten my life together in a chic, HGTV kind of way, which is always the vibe I’m after."

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: ‎9 x 9 x 13 inches
  • Promising review: "It's super helpful in showcasing all my small and big products in one place. The turning is so smooth that I feel like I'm in my own little department store at home. (I'll secretly admit I remove a few of the shelves so I can store taller products.)" — Candelario

Best Budget-Friendly Makeup Organizer

4. Masirs Makeup Organizer

What I Like

  • affordable
  • 16 compartments and four drawers
  • easy to clean

What I Don't Like

  • on the smaller side

Masirs

This mini storage unit may be simple, but it gets the job done for a reasonable price—and offers great flexibility in how you display your beauty products. "I keep my makeup hidden in a dresser drawer, so I like the fact that I can arrange this organizer to my liking since the top half isn’t attached to the clear drawers," says PureWow Associate Editor Stephanie Meraz.

You needn't be limited to makeup, either—the compartments are also a great size for housing jewelry, nail files and hair clips. I also love how easy it is to wipe clean the acrylic (because powder foundation spills inevitably happen).

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: ‎‎5.5 x 9.5 x 7.5 inches
  • Promising review: "I’ve had this for over three years now, and it’s helped me keep my blushes, bronzers, eyeshadow palettes, lipsticks, concealers and foundations organized, and is especially great if you follow a simple routine with few products, because it’s on the smaller side." — Meraz

Most Luxe Makeup Organizer

5. Beautifect Makeup Organizer

What I Like

  • easy to take on the go
  • includes illuminated mirror with 3 brightness levels

What I Don't Like

  • pricey
  • brush loops aren't very stretchy/accommodating

Beautifect

If you're booked and busy and prefer a makeup station you can take on the go, this might be the perfect organizer for you. There are special compartments for skinny and thick brushes, lipsticks, and it comes with an LED-lit mirror that features three levels of brightness. "I definitely love the whole lighting situation," says PureWow Associate Editor Marissa Wu. Despite normally doing her makeup in natural light, she appreciates how Beautifect's illumination can mimic the glow in dark apartments, "so I know when I walk outside I won't look like a clown."

The compartments are well thought out, offering a space for just about every beauty product you can imagine, and when pressed, her only concern were the side flaps for brushes and tubes: "I like that they're grippy so stuff doesn't fall out, but the small base loops...aren't very stretchy."

Fast Facts

  • Dimensions: 11.4 x 9.8 x 3.5 inches
  • Promising review: "The perfectionist in me is quite tickled [by its compartments and special features]. It fits in my travel backpack, and so I think yes, I am being extra, but I love to have a good light with me when I travel." —Wu

What to Consider When Shopping for Makeup Organizers

Beyond budget and aesthetics, you'll want to consider the following:

  • Dimensions — Both so it fits comfortably on a counter or within a cabinet and has enough room for your essentials.
  • Material — Acrylic organizers tend to be the most popular because they are see-through and easy to wipe down for cleaning. But there are other wooden and plastic models that are just as durable but aren't transparent, which can be nice if seeing all those items feels visually cluttered and messy to you.
  • Number of compartments — About how many products do you want to corral? Will you want slots to hold each lip product, and if so, about how many will you need? How many compartments is too much for you to keep up with? (Or could you risk outgrowing too soon, rendering the organizer irrelevant within months?)

What's the Best Overall Makeup Organizer?

With its tall silhouette—which doesn't take up much countertop space—and several compartments, the Sorbus makeup organizer is my pick for the best overall organizer. Beyond its excellent storage, it's reasonably priced and is easy to wipe clean. Win, win, win.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Should I Organize My Makeup?

First things first: declutter and clean. Go through all your makeup and toss any that are expired, broken or used up. Wipe down any that may have spilled.

Next, sort by category. A good way to organize is lipsticks with lipsticks, powders with powders, etc. But a great way to organize is to think in terms of looks: daytime looks vs. nighttime looks. This will help you determine which items should be stored where.

Based on all that, you can start picking your organizer. Chances are, you're using countertop space, so you'll likely want to use a stackable organizer. If you have a lot of powders and eyeshadow palettes, you'll want one with drawers. (You'll also want to measure your palettes to make sure they fit into said drawers.) Go with what works best for you.

Are Makeup Organizers Worth It?

If you own more than five beauty products, yes. They're an easy way to actually put all of those products to use, since they're within reach and simple to spot at a glance.
